Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is a hair restoration technique in which hair follicles are
harvested from one area of the scalp, usually the back or sides of the head, and transplanted to
areas where hair is thinning. It’s one of the most effective and commonly used methods to
restore hair. It has multiple advantages over other methods.
Advanced Technology
Hair restoration technology has advanced significantly. The FUE technique is extremely precise
and far less invasive than past methods. Hair grows in tiny units comprised of 18 to 23 hairs, not
individual strands. Targeted hair follicle units are removed for transplantation without
disturbing surrounding hair or its natural appearance.
Undetectable
Transplanted hair follicles begin to grow naturally, just as they did prior to being extracted. The
result of the technique is virtually undetectable. Scarring is minimal, allowing individuals to
wear their hair in multiple styles as they desire. The technique creates a more natural and
visually appealing appearance.
Less Discomfort
Individuals that undergo the procedure experience far less discomfort and complications are
rare. Signs of the surgery usually only last a week. The procedure is performed on an outpatient
basis with a local anesthetic. There are no hospital stays. Mild analgesics can be used to
manage any discomfort.
Quicker Recovery
One of the many advantages of the procedure is less downtime. Healing is quicker and
individuals are subject to fewer post-surgical restrictions. Individuals can return to work and
most normal activities the next day. Full recovery typically takes 7 to 10 days.
Affordable
The cost of FUE is based on the number of hair units that are transplanted during a single
session. The technology enables the surgeon to remove more hairs per session to achieve the
desired results. FUE has a 90 to 95 percent transplant survival rate compared to the FUT
method that only has a 75 percent survival rate.
